I was flipping through this book the other day titled:
"THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING ISLAM".
It is filled with fun facts. Some of which, I didn't even know. One of them concerns the term "Mosque." So many of us think that this is an English translation for Masjid. I'm sure most of us are unaware and did not investigate as to how the term Mosque originated in place of Masjid. We were very young when, learned/taught this English word Mosque. Our minds then were not inclined to criticize, so didn't dare to ask/challenge our teachers. Anyway the above mentioned book pointed out that the term 'mosque' is derived from the Spanish word for "mosquito." It was termed as such during the Crusades when, King Ferdinand announced that they will swat the Muslims "like mosquitoes". (Where else could they find Muslims in a large enough number to be swatted but in Masjid?). To humiliate the Muslims they termed "Masjid" as "Mosque". Therefore, I ask earnestly to dear brothers and sisters in Islam, to refrain from using the term Mosque for Musjid which, obviously is intended as an insult to the Ummah. Kindly educate our brothers and sisters to the etymology/history of the word Mosque so that, they always use the word: MASJID! The Place of Worship for the Muslims!! Not Mosque: the place to be swatted!"
